🧐 Did you know?

Ageism in the tech industry has been a growing concern in recent years, with several research studies highlighting the issue and its implications.

  • Age Bias: A study by the University of Gothenburg found that people over 35 are considered "old" in the tech industry and face stereotypes about being less adaptable, tech-savvy, or interested in coding.

  • Hiring Practices: A 2018 study by Visier analyzed anonymized employee records and found that tech companies disproportionately hire younger workers.

  • Underrepresentation of older workers: The tech industry has a disproportionately lower number of workers over 40. For example, Meta's average age is around 28, while the national average is closer to 42.

It’s a Shock, I know 😲 So what do you do?

Second Act

From Shock to Thriving

Losing your job at any age can be unsettling, but for those over 50, it can feel like a particularly devastating blow. It’s a shock, so allow yourself to handle the emotions. Grieve, vent, rage, repaint your room – whatever helps you process. But don't let it paralyze you. It's about navigating the emotional and professional challenges and, ultimately, about rebooting your career for a more fulfilling future.

The Fork in the Road

Keep Going, But Different: 💭

The familiar path might still hold appeal. You could dust off your resume, highlight your achievements, and aim for a similar position. But remember, the world has changed, and so have you. This time, approach your job search with a renewed perspective, emphasizing the unique skills and wisdom you bring.

Retreat and Recharge: 💤

Stepping back from the corporate grind can be a powerful reset. Take time to reconnect with yourself, explore passions, and rediscover what truly matters. This period of reflection can lead to unexpected insights and guide your next move.

Beyond the Fear

Embracing the Unknown:

Losing a job can be emotionally raw. Fear, uncertainty, and self-doubt are natural, but don't let them control your decisions. Instead, use these emotions as fuel for self-discovery. Ask yourself:

  • Who am I beyond my job title?

  • What are my deepest values and passions?

  • What legacy do I want to leave behind?

By answering these questions, you can move from a place of fear to a place of purpose.

Beyond the Job Title

Redefining Leadership

Leadership isn't just about titles and teams. It's about influence, inspiration, and making a positive impact. Remember, you are a leader within, and your leadership extends far beyond the corporate world.

  • Lead your life with intention: What values will guide your decisions?

  • Become your advocate: Invest in your personal and professional development.

  • Build meaningful connections: Network, collaborate, and share your expertise.

  • Make a difference: Use your skills and talents to contribute to your community.

Remember, you are not alone. Navigating this transition can be daunting. Consider reaching out to:

  • Career coaches: Help you identify your options, overcome roadblocks, and build a confident plan. My coach, Jennifer, helped me discover my second act: to become a coach to creative leaders in tech.

  • Mentors and peers: Learn from their experiences and tap into their networks.

  • Online communities: Connect with other tech leaders facing similar challenges, share advice, and build support.

Embrace Your Inner Leader

You don't need a fancy title to be a leader. You've built teams, solved problems, and inspired others. Use that leadership within to:

  • Be your advocate: Market yourself authentically and confidently.

  • Build your brand: Showcase your expertise through writing, speaking, or online platforms.

  • Contribute to your community: Mentor young talent, volunteer your skills, or join industry boards.

💥 The Short Of It

Age is Just a Number

Don't let ageism hold you back. Your experience is an asset, not a liability. Embrace this opportunity for growth and reinvention. By taking control of your narrative and tapping into your inner leader, you can create a future that's even more fulfilling than before.
