The Wild West of Tech Leadership

"I have to prove I belong here."

That’s the mantra driving a Design Director I spoke with this week. Newly promoted into an executive role, they’ve been blasted with a firehose of new metrics, new teams, new cross-functional peers, and aggressive deadlines.

Imposter syndrome has pushed them into overdrive: 14-hour workdays, agonizing over every word at leadership meetings, and attempting to master every single request that comes their way.

Now, they’re exhausted, sleeping poorly, and waiting for the moment they're "exposed" as a fraud. Here’s what I told them about stepping into executive leadership...

“The beauty of the impostor syndrome is you double down on research, on competence, on preparation.”

You Have the Right to Feel Fraudulent

As a former tech executive, I can tell you that you solve this by embracing a counter-intuitive solution: recognizing that you have a right to feel fraudulent.

But getting to that place of confidence? It nearly broke me.

When I was first promoted into the ranks of senior design director, I was a road accident waiting to happen. I remember walking into the executive morning stand-up call, my stomach tightly knotted. I was the only woman and only Product Design Director in a room packed with VPs and C-level executives. I didn't speak the transactional jargon of the business developers. I hadn’t played golf with them. I didn’t follow the sports or movies they used for casual small talk, leaving me entirely isolated before the meeting even started.

“When you’re an artist or creative person, you always feel like you’re pulling a trick on people. You feel like a magician, and you’re waiting for someone to point out how the illusion works.”

David Byrne, Musician, Artist, and Talking Heads Founder

Every single morning, my body was flooded with an overwhelming surge of stress, fear, and raw frustration. I could feel my heart racing, my throat tightening, and my brain, scrambling to make sense of the physical toll played a relentless, toxic loop on repeat: "You are a fraud. You don't belong here."

For months, I carried anxiety around like a lead weight. It completely warped my decision-making, narrowed my strategic thinking, and ruined my sleep. I let myself get so incredibly uptight and deeply upset over a daily 8:00 AM meeting. For what?

Looking back, the real heartbreak is that I was failing my teams. Because I was paralyzed by my own fear, I wasn't fiercely protecting them or championing their work the way they deserved.

Goodness, I wish I had given myself the grace to know then what I know now.

✦ THE INSIGHT ✦

Feeling Like an Imposter is a Normal Physiological Response

With the benefit of hindsight, I realized something game-changing: I had a right to feel out of place. I was breaking a glass ceiling. The agonizing self-doubt wasn't a personal flaw; it was a completely normal physiological response to being an outsider in an unfamiliar and rather hostile environment.

True design leadership isn't about twisting qualitative, iterative design loops into daily, adrenaline-fueled business metrics just to appease the room. It's about having the courage to look a hostile executive in the eye and say, "Our progress is qualitative right now, and here is the strategic direction we are unlocking."

A former colleague of mine used to experience that exact same paralyzing dread every time he had to update Steve Jobs: "You say too little, he thinks you’re stupid. You say too much, he thinks you’re stupid."

The secret is breaking the silence and separating your intense, panicked feelings from the hard facts. You do not need to master their spreadsheets to belong at the table; you just need to bring the unique, human-centric design perspective they are desperately missing.

🧠 The Short of It Is

You can't beat imposter syndrome by trying to match the overwhelming speed and data demands of other executives. Leadership presence comes from:

  • Acknowledging the discomfort of the new attitude

  • Separating your anxious feelings from the facts

  • Owning your expertise without apology
